#11F, “International Day of Women and Girls in Science”

The Spanish “11 de Febrero” initiative was born on September 2016 to commemorate the “International Day of Women and Girls in Science”.

According to the website https://11defebrero.org/, the initiative calls people, institutions, companies, schools, libraries, etc. to organize activities close to the 11th of February, announcing them on a web page (11defebrero.org) and on its social networks. The webpage offers as well a wealth of materials freely available to use in their activities.

In the IES VILLANUEVA, (Villanueva de Gallego, Zaragoza) we have carried out a research project about famous female scientists with the students of 2º ESO.

MUSIC PROJECT

“Without music, life would be a mistake.”

We are going to start a fun project which will give you the opportunity to  create your own rock band. You will make an album cover, gig poster, biographies about your band members and write the names of the songs on the first hit album. The final task is to record  an interview with the band members.

First step: You will make up the biography of your band. In order to do this, I will give you some printed tips. Besides, you can take a look at the following videos:

The History of The Beatles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZSHsJjsh-Y.

The History of The Rolling Stones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5I9Z6iPTLo

Taylor Swift Biography (UPDATE): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad3vMEVc_f0

The Bangles – Behind the Music (Part 1): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u-nuQrJIfY

You  have  to think about  the band name and the names and biographies of the band members.

Second step: you have to make a CD Cover, in which the title of some of the songs will appear.  You can take ideas from here:

Third step: you have to record an interview/press conference with the band members. You can also record a videoclip.

Fourth step: imagine that you are a journalist and you have to write a review about one of their songs.

I will give you some handouts who will be guidelines to help you.

Good luck!!

Introduction

In this project  we will be  traveling around the USA. Each group will be assigned a different State  and will choose a city to explore.

After you have gathered all your information, you will create a travel brochure to tell other members of your class about your city.

Part 1

You and the members of your group will be assigned by the teacher a State of the United States; within the State you will choose a city.  You will research the following  information:

  • Historical sites.
  •  Past Leaders
  • Most famous buildings
  • Size of city.

Choosing your city

Your will be assigned a State by your teacher.  Your group should choose one city  from your State to travel to and learn about.  Since you have the freedom to choose your own city to research, pick one that your group members would like to travel to.

States:

California.

New York.

Texas.

Pennsylvania.

Florida.

Roles

Each group member will be assigned a number, which corresponds to one of the following roles:

1. Cultural Director:

Historical Sites.

Past Leaders related to that City.

Most Famous Buildings.

** In order for your group to successfully finish this project, each group member must work hard to complete their individual task. If any one person finishes early, they should help other members of their group. **

    Creating a Travel Brochure

Your group members should combine all of the information found into a travel brochure.  Your brochure can be as creative as you like.  You should use construction paper and crayons, markers , colored pencils, pictures, photos from magazines.

Each group will be sharing their brochures with the class at the end of the week.

CLASROOM PROJECT FOR 2º ESO: BE A NEWSPAPER REPORTER!!

«Journalism keeps you planted in the earth». Ray Bradbury

During this project you are going to become a real newspaper writer. Think about what interests you. Also think about what you need to do to write a successful newspaper story — things like writing a good lead sentence, spelling correctly, and putting an interesting quote in your story. Your story and the stories of other students will go together to make a class newspaper.

I will give you the materials you need to accomplish it.

Your paper wil have the following sections (at least on of them must be related to the topic of TECHNOLOGY):

News story.

An interview.

An opinion article.

An ad.

There are several things you must take into account:

Who – What – When – Where – Why – How. Almost all newspaper stories start off by answering most of these questions. Try to answer these questions in your story. Check your local newspaper for more examples.

What makes a good story? Anything that could interest or affect your classmates, teachers, school or family will make a good story. For example, science topics like the strange worlds of the planets and how the weather works … school activities such as fund-raisers, what goes on in music classes, and the importance of safety patrols in the playground … after-school activities … a review of a book you enjoyed …  all could make good newspaper stories. Be curious. Ask yourself, «What would I like to know more about?» — then write a story about it.

Writing the story. Start with a good lead — a sentence that grabs your reader and makes her want to read more. Write your story plainly so that everyone can understand it. If possible, use quotes in your story to make it more interesting – for example, «The flames were so hot I thought my helmet would melt,» the firefighter said. And remember to answer the questions Who – What – When – Where – Why – How.

Good luck!!
